TO2 project: Seaweed as a new source for food, raw material and energy in a biobased economy.

Seaweed offers many high quality resources for food-, feeding- and chemical sector. Presently, seaweed is mostly imported from Asia and used for human consumption. A part is used for mining of hydrocolloid, like: alginate, agar and carrageen. Many initiatives are small scale. For a breakthrough of local large scale production of seaweed essential knowledge and experience is currently lacking. Seaweed might help the transition to a bio-based economy and is surely an aspect of Blue Growth.

The objective of this project is to design an economically sustainable North Sea seaweed chain. The project approach concerns a multidisciplinary collaboration on a broad level; from physiology and growth of seaweed to the processing and maritime technology at sea. Due to its complexity the bundling is required of knowledge and capacity of five applied science research institutes, i.e. DLO, ECN, Deltares, TNO and MARIN.
